What Size Winch Line Do You Need?

What Size Winch Line Do You Need?

BlogsBy Atlas Winch & Hoist Services07/06/2022

As you set up your winch, one of the most important things to consider is the winch line. What type of cable or rope should you choose, and more importantly, what size winch line is best? The winch line will depend greatly on the job at hand and how often you’re likely to use it.…

A spooling winch or spooler is a large drum that turns to wind and unwind the cable used in winching. There are many options when it comes to choosing a spooler, so you’ll need to make sure you have the right one for your needs. The spooler turns either manually or via a motor, making it possible to wind the cable up onto the spool or let it out. You’ll find them available in all sizes, but bigger isn’t necessarily better. It all depends on what you need to winch and how much cable you need. Choosing a spooler that is far too large will simply take up more space and make it more difficult to move around. A small spooler may not be suitable for your needs and can rapidly need replacing. Choose the Size The size of the spooler matters more than you may imagine. It’s very important to have the right size, so you’ll need to look at a few factors. Cable length: You may not know exactly what length of cable you need, but in most cases, you can estimate. For example, if you’ll use the winch in a warehouse, you should be able to determine the maximum height for a pull. Add in at least eight wraps around the winch, as you should never unwind it more than this and you have the length of the cable. Cable diameter: How thick is the cable you intend to use? Thicker lines will take up more space, even if they are shorter. This will be a major factor in how large the drum is. Uses: What do you intend to use the spooler for? Some are specifically designed for vehicles, while others are best for marine use. If you have a specific need, be sure to look for a spooler that is rated for that. All this information will help you select the right size of the spooler. The spooler should be large enough to accommodate the maximum length of the largest cable you intend to use. It should also be rated for the pull you need. At Atlas Winch and Hoist, we offer a range of spoolers, as well as multiple winch options.
