A winch is a great tool to be used by businesses and homeowners alike, used to lift or move heavy objects, adjust the tension of a rope and more. However, it can be hard to decide what type of winch you need for you or your business. There are many different types, each with its own benefits.
Read on to find out some helpful tips to help you choose a winch.
Capacity
You need to consider the capacity of your winch, which means thinking about what you need it for. You should be buying a winch that is capable of handling about 1.5x the heaviest load you think you’ll be moving or lifting. This ensures it can easily function properly and you don’t have to worry about it potentially breaking down.
Essentially the more capacity the better your winch will perform, so it’s always best to go big when buying a new winch.
Type Of Winch
There are a few different types of winch that you can buy. This includes hydraulic, electric, air and diesel. This is how the four types differ:
- Hydraulic Winch – Hydraulic winches work by using pressurised fluid to power energy through a vehicle power steering pump.
- Electric Winch – Electric winches work by linking them to an electrical system that supplies the power used to make the drum turn.
- Air Winch – An air winch uses a pair of radial pistons to direct compressed air towards a set of ports. The air exerted causes the drum to rotate and the air winch to move.
- Diesel Winch – A diesel winch works by using fuel to power it. They’re great for when you don’t have access to other sources of power.
Rope
You’ll want to think about whether you want to use a steel cable or a synthetic rope. Steel cable is durable and easy to maintain but is quite heavy. It’s also easy to use in highly abrasive terrains but needs to be handled with care using gloves, as steel cable can cut your hands easily. Synthetic rope is safer and more flexible but is less durable and requires more maintenance. You don’t have to wear gloves while handling
