What Mooring Equipment Does a Vessel Need?
Every mooring connects a vessel to a fixed point on the seabed or the quayside. What that takes depends on how the vessel is being held.
Single-Point Mooring
For a vessel riding to one buoy or anchor, you will need an anchor or sinker, chain, a mooring buoy, a pennant wire or riser, and shackles to join them.
Multi-Point Mooring Spreads
Barges and survey vessels that must hold position are moored on 4, 6 or 8 points. Each point needs its own anchor, with a pennant wire and marker buoy for recovery, chain or wire running back to the vessel, and a winch on each line to set and adjust tension.
Mooring Alongside a Quay or Vessel
When mooring alongside, you will need bollards, Schmitt brackets or panama chocks to take the lines, plus ropes or wires sized for the load.
On any spread, the connecting hardware matters as much as the anchor. Kenter shackles, hammer locks and pear links join chain and wire lengths, and swivels stop the line twisting. Load monitoring on the winches shows when tension is building before it becomes a problem.
