Winches have been around for millennia, although the large-scale winches used in industrial settings today have come far in comparison to the manual winches used back in Roman times.
As within many industries, technological advancements are further innovating winch design, improving their efficiency, safety and overall performance. Here are three examples of how technological innovations have been incorporated into winch design.
1. Automatic Brake Systems
Safety is paramount in winching operations, largely because many of the materials and objects involved are on a rather large scale – meaning any failures or malfunctions can result in significant damage or accidents in the most serious of cases.
In order to combat this and reduce the chances of such accidents from occurring, automatic brake systems are incorporated into winches. This will automatically stop the winch from operating if and when certain thresholds are exceeded (e.g. overloading or a control system failure).
2. Load Sensing Technology
As with any piece of lifting equipment, winches must operate within their safe working load; this means that they can only carry a maximum permissible weight – as required in the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER).
With this in mind, many winches now feature load sensing technology. This is an extremely beneficial feature in numerous ways. Firstly, it maximises the safety of winch operations, as the load detectors used within the winch help to prevent overloading.
This also increases the efficiency with which they operate, as the sensors allow the winches to adapt their pulling force based on the weight being pulled, which subsequently optimises power usage and reduces energy consumption. All of these factors help extend the lifespan of the various components that make up the winch.
3. Remote Monitoring
Lastly, wireless connectivity has also changed the winching games. By establishing wireless connectivity within winch systems, this allows for key real-time data to be monitored remotely. This data includes information such as load tension, winch temperature and power consumption to be logged and analysed, ensuring that winches continue to operate at an optimal level.
This also helps for detecting any potential issues and proactively scheduling preventative maintenance, which can help to maintain the lifespan of winches and ensure downtime is minimised.
