Filled with jargon and confusing terms, it can be challenging for boating beginners to understand and use the complicated terminology that is relevant to boats. In this article, we’ll name and explain some of the most bizarre nautical terms found in use today, helping you to become a sea-worthy expert!
Sponson
Attached to the site of a watercraft, sponsons are incredibly helpful additions to a variety of vessels. A sponson is a projection that extends from the side of the vehicle, helping to provide protection and stability to the boat. Certain sponsons can also be used for storage or to mount special devices, making them worthwhile additions to many boating vehicles. Sponsons can also be added to land vehicles and aircraft too!
Orlop
Typically, the orlop is the lowest deck in a ship with four or more decks, positioned directly above the hold. In many cases, this is where cables and other equipment are stowed away when not in use, preventing them from becoming a hazard on other important decks.
Fiddle
Thanks to the rhythm of the water, travelling on a ship is not usually the most smooth affair. With sailors and other inhabitants experiencing the push and pull of waves on a boat, the same is true of any unfixed furnishings. To help prevent items and belongings from sliding off of shelving and tables and creating a mess, often fiddles are used. The term refers to a structure similar to a fence that is built around the perimeter of a horizontal surface, including tables, to prevent items from sliding off and breaking.
Wheelhouse
Designed to protect the person in control of a water vessel, the wheelhouse is a covering that shields a person as they steer a ship. Depending on the boat’s size, the wheelhouse will be tailored to fit in perfectly, from huge dedicated rooms in commercial ships to small doorless coverings on speedboats.
Yar
Used to describe a sailboat, the term yar is used to show that a sailboat is agile and easily manoeuvred. It’s a positive adjective, helping to present the particular advantages of a specific boat or ship easily.
