Industrial winches are some of the most common types of winches in the world and, for the most part, the main reason for the machine’s invention. There are, of course, winches for other roles, such as smaller sailboats and car winches, but there is no doubt that the industrial winch controls most of the market. Though, within this sector, there are a myriad of winch types which range from large-scale winches to smaller variants.
At times, it can be a confusing market to navigate, which is why we have written this blog to make it all a little easier for you. So, in this article, we will discuss a few of the most common winch types to help you with your research.
The electric winch
Arguably, the most simple design of all the industrial winches the electric winch is a favourite among many sectors. Essentially, this system works much the same as the traditional pre-industrial revolution man-powered winches. There is a central drum which the rope or wire coils around and a stopper to act as a break for this drum. An electric motor powers this drum and makes it spin. This rotation can be selected to wind the cable or rope in or out depending on whether the user wants to pull something in or draw it out. As you might expect, electric winches are on the lower end of the power spectrum.
Air winches
Air winches are also incredibly popular in the industrial industry and certainly sit on the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to their power. They are often used in the marine industry and can pull incredibly heavy loads. Like most winches, they have a central drum with coils the rope or cable in or out. Though they are powered in a slightly unusual way. Essentially there are two tubes which have high-pressured air sent through them. This air then causes the drum to spin and thus wrap the cable in or out, depending on the direction of the airflow.
Hydraulic winches
These winches are, again, on the higher end of the power spectrum. Essentially, they use hydraulic fluid, which is directed through a motor pump to spin the drum of the winch. Hydraulic power is incredibly capable and many industries which deal with large weights have these winches as their first choice.
