Winches can be used for a range of different applications. Typically, we may see them on industrial sites or construction projects, but they can be used in a range of emergency situations too! Our blog dives into how you should use your winch safely in an off-road recovery situation. To find out more, keep on reading!
Off Road Recovery: Do’s & Don’ts
Having a winch in an emergency situation can potentially save lives if operated correctly. We’ve outlined some of the most important do’s and don’ts when it comes to off road winch recovery.
Do’s:
- Make sure that your winch has been respooled before you use it. Winches aren’t ready to see straight out of the box and can cause cable damage. Cables and ropes should be respooled to ensure they are stacked properly.
- Use frame-mounted tow points rather than the winch hook when towing and pulling. A winch is supposed to be used with the pulling vehicle or a stationary anchor.
- If you’re using a tree as a stationary anchor, it’s important to use a large tree and a large strap. Trees are strongest the closer to the ground you get, so tying your strap to the base of the tree is the safest decision.
- Ensure that you clear the area before you start winching, and operate the winch without people around. This reduces the likelihood of injuries.
Don’ts:
- In no circumstance should you go barehanded when it comes to your winch. Do not grab the winch or cable with your bare hands. Frays in the cable or other debris can cause serious injury to your hands.
- Never shock load your winch, as this can create tension that causes the winch to break. This could even end up damaging the vehicle you’re trying to recover.
- Never attach your hook to the steering components or to the vehicle’s suspension. This can cause serious damage to the vehicle.
- Most importantly, don’t rush your recovery operation. Take your time to carefully assess the citation and find the best possible approach to the recovery.
